Update
- location maps
- Bergen has done some fine work on preparing
maps. Before we decided to go to West Hawk, he modified/customized
this Caddy Lake pdf (you need Adobe
Acrobat to see this file.)
- now that we're off to West Hawk, click on
this picture to open the full size pdf.

- shirts
- I biked from work to Luke's office at lunch
today and examined a sample shirt. It was not the exact shirt that
we would be ordering, but the material was similar. Perhaps a little
less fitted. Here's a link to the shirt Luke had in his office.
NFL
shirt As you can see, the US price is $34. I'm looking forward
to looking like that shirt when I put it on.
- we need sizes from Altona. Duke, as
the Altona rep, can you get this going?
May 6, 2003
Seventh meeting.
Present: Penner, Jaun
Eppstein, Bergen, Darryl, Jonny G (a brief showing, but a fine effort
indeed to fit the club in after a practise and before a game), Luke (very
briefly, by phone, after the meeting was half over. Question of calling
a six was raised, but defeated because he actually did call the club and
page a member to the front desk.)
Regrets: Unger, Marls, Chris, Altona, off-shore rep, Ontario/AMBS rep
A smaller group (as
Jonny could only stay for 45 minutes) which merited a discussion on what
number was required for a quorum. It was decided that anyone at the Fox
and Hound tuesday evening after 9:30pm was a quorum. Location was once
again a major topic of discussion. To the details:
April 29, 2003
Sixth meeting.
Present: Luke (thanks
to Marls' cel phone which saved the purchase of a six), Unger, Jaun Eppstein,
Chris,Jonny, Bergen, Darryl, Marls, and a special appearance by Trevor
D.
Regrets: Penner
After a brief wait,
a cel phone call, and eventually Luke's arrival, we were ready to go.
Visuals were produced, and the sixth meeting of the Fort Garry Bike Club
was underway.
-
report
from the location committee
- the
unveiling of the map of the Whiteshell took Club reporting
to the next level. (Let's not forget that Bergen was the
first vocal "volunteer", so perhaps it was to
be expected)
- research
done for the meeting revealed that five campgrounds including
Caddy Lake have group areas. Quick consensus that Caddy
had to be the place. Afterall, it is but a 10k ride to the
trailhead.
- new
info since the meeting: Bergen called the office and
the guy said Caddy has no group use area. What now?
- report from
the shirt committee
- not to
be outdone, Luke whips out the shirt brochure (with his customary
flair) which is almost equal in area to the Whiteshell map.
- the product
is a t-shirt with descriptors like - under armor; performance
top; 100% polycool
- price
around $15 before tax and silkscreening
- colour
- black was chosen (not quite by consensus mind you. blue
weighed in as well.)
- then
the discussion of sponsorship/fundraising started up.
- could
we get a company to sponsor the "team" and cover
the cost of the shirts? FGB, Security Decorating, Jake
Rempel, Snider Orthotic Designs and the Fox and Hound
came up as potentials.
- seems
Luke is the most enthusiastic on this topic. most of the
rest would rather just pay than ask. in fact, the question
was raised as to why a Jake would sponsor us. "shits
and giggles" responded Marls.
- no
one seemed opposed to doing a little advertising on their
shirt if it meant saving a few bucks, so Luke has been
empowered to forge on.
- although
there was a call for a treasurer, there was no definitive
response that could actually pin it on anyone.
- logo for
the shirts. here is a potential option
- how we
will deal with the various colours needs to be determined.
- Luke's bike
tune-up has brought a new joy to riding
- Chris, Unger
and Bergen are doing the MCC Bike the Whiteshell ride. http://www.mcc.org/manitoba/
- they
seemed to think that non-participation in this ride should
equal sponsorship
- more input
from the Technical Director
- it doesn't
really matter which multi-tool, you should just have one when
you're riding alone. (tools will be available at our event.)
- to reitierate
from a previous meeting: everyone should have an extra tube
for our ride.
- lots
of water is also important
- water
- the MEC
version of the Platypus is a good buy and highly recommended.
check
it out!
- word
is that it can hold 5.5 bottles of beer

Fifth meeting.
Present:
Regrets: Philly, Bergen, Unger, out-of-towners
Another lovely meeting.
Pleasant turn of events with Marls joining us, it would seem, for keeps.
The date discussion reared it's head once again from that dark place,
lurking just under the placid surface. It seems this meeting put the ugly
beast to rest in a fairly casual manner. Disregard any future comment
on the date of the 2003 event.
Other comment:
- Further to
Marls participation.
- all systems
seem to be go. his ride has been repaired by the good folk
at Natural Cycle and they even came in under the quoted price.
Unheard of. www.naturalcycle.ca/
An A+ has been given by Marls.
- location
committee report
- tabled
until such time as the location committee does the research
and comes to the meeting.
- we will
continue to assume Caddy Lake as the location until the location
committee comes up with something better
- Important
note on meeting attendence
- six-pack
rule has been adopted. any member who does not send regrets
to a meeting owes a six-pack. Out-of-town members are exempt
for now. all notices of regret (or general comment) should
be emailed to bike_club2003@yahoo.ca as noted in the header.
six-packs owed will be tallied in the minutes.
- speaking
of meeting attendence... does anyone recognize this person?
.
- Inviting
other members... a couple more names have been mentioned
- Bechtel
as US rep
- Welly
as off-shore rep
- T-shirt committee
- we want a report. word is that Luke is this committee, and again,
hope was expressed in the potential to have great shirts, but
spirits quickly sagged, when... well... the word 'attendence'
was uttered.
- Date of
note:
dog trial over the fire at Jaun Eppstein's tuesday, May 20
- word on Duke
- rumoured to be training against the brisk country wind. may
have taken a run out to Plum Coulee this last week
- trails committee
- Jonny and Chris
- word from
the Technical Director (TD) - everyone should have a multitool.
please check here
@ MEC for options. the TD will hopefully make a recommendation
from this list at the next meeting.
- Next meeting:
April 29, usual site, usual time
- Chris'
last meeting with us for a few weeks as he is out of town
on Bike Club business. inspecting Utah and the Moab Desert
for suitability as Bike Club 2004 destination. we will expect
a full report.

Fourth meeting. A doozy.
Present: Barg, Bergen,
Unger, Chris, Jonny, Jaun Eppstein, Penner
Well, well. Top of
the minutes has to be (sorry to those who need chronological order) the
debate over the date. A misunderstanding developed and was addressed even
before the arrival of Penner, the president. The phrase, "last weekend
in May", was not, apparently, an adequate discriptor of the date
of our event. Last complete weekend? Or last weekend that falls partly
in May? All was eventually settled after it was determined that the President
is not available on the latter. This was even clarified without Penner's
"green book", (the whereabouts of which is still unclear).
Let it then be known
that the dates are as follows: May 23-25. Participate as you are
able.
Other details of
this very productive meeting:
- Another go
at a potential participation list: All present at this evening's
meeting; Luke; Duke; Marls; Jonny S; Philly.
- Tabled:
a discussion on the potential of Marls really stepping up
and joining the group. Hope was expressed, but some past history
of non-participation dampened the mood..
- Location,
location, location.
- in a
surprise move, displaying a level of forthrightness previously
unregistered in the Club, Bergen volunteered to explore location
and accomodation options. Yes, volunteered. He is now the
location committee, with all rights and priviledges...
- general
consensus was the Whiteshell region with Caddy Lake being
mentioned a number of times.
- concern
was evident that we are not separated as a group. overflow
or group-use areas would be preferred. a number of sites next
to one another would also suffice as long as it isn't at a
campground where the parkies are all uptight about larger
group gatherings.
- renting
a cabin was also raised as an option. participant numbers
would then be more of a factor, but likely manageable.
- consensus
on the fact that Jeffrey Dale would need to find alternate
accommodations due to snoring levels that reach dangerous
and sleep depriving SPL's
- Club governance.
although we do have a president and a few other significant positions,
it seems understood that we are really more of a self-governing
collective with a figurehead. (the general public and more importantly,
potential sponsors, have been known to misunderstand self-governing
collectives.)
- Provisions
-
- joint
Dog feast for Saturday supper. (Penner has offered to drive
to Country Meats and Sausage in Blumenort to pick-up the finest
European wieners South East MB has to offer.) Click here
for an nice anecdotal comment on aforementioned abbatoir (Dog
shop), or here
for the official corporate site..
- everything
else is Bring Your Own...
- Other committee
appointments: (see April 1 for previous decisions)
- Rural
representative to the executive (wink, wink, nudge, nudge:.
collective? what collective?): Duke
- Out of
province rep: Jeffrey Dale
- Shirts:
Luke
- Tarp
Committee: Jonny
- this
position is understood to be limited to making sure we
have enough tarps and rope, not design and implementation.
That usually requires a minimum number of males, beers,
and opinions. A matter of pride really.
- the Technical
Director would like it noted that all members are responsible
for their own extra tire tubes. A patch kit and pump will be provided,
however.
- other ideas
that did not receive full group approval but seemed supported
by some
- making
personal training logs available on the website
- a pre-trip
Club ride
- making
pictures of each member's ride available on the website
- Next Meeting
- April 22, same place, same time.

April
10, 2003
Well, no meeting this week. It's been heard that Luke is doing push-ups
to prepare for the upcoming biking adventure.
Here's a couple of
yurt links for those who have yet to figure this out. Lack of yurt understanding
has hampered fruitful discussion to date. Maybe we can dream about yurts
for next time. Or, we could take a collection and buy our own. Really,
just type "yurts" into www.google.com. So much to learn, so
little time.
Minaki
Yurts
Yurts made for purchase.
April 1, 2003

(as determined at the first meeting) Penner

- Accomodations:
Tent
- Other: Unger
needs to buy a bike and call Duke.
